The Bet
Synopsis
Two childhood friends, Oscar and Garry embark on a new mission to finish an ever-lasting bet between themselves, a bet to see who can get with a girl they emotionally care about, named Rachel. To settle this bet, Oscar builds a time machine to go back in time, to see truly who the better man is.
Both men put everything on the line. If Oscar loses, he will lose his “greatness” and Rachel, after being with her for many years prior to the future events about to take place. Garry’s confidence and ego will be destroyed.
To start with, Oscar is unsure if his Genius invention will be a success. He tries to construct a time machine, capable of travelling to the past and the future. To test his machine, he needs a live subject.
Garry, being less academic of the two suggests idiotic answers like: a bug or a racoon.
However, just at that moment a scratch can be heard from the garage door nearby... Moments later, Oscars dog stands before them. Having no other option left, Oscar attaches the time machine to his dog, hoping for his invention to work. Without hesitating, he sends his dog to the past.
Garry, confused and upset due to likely hood of never seeing the dog again starts to whimper. But, hope was not lost, as the dog was then monitored on the “Space heart beat sensor”, indicating that it was alive.
This project was inspired by Jack’s own opinion on fate. He believes that there is no such thing as fate and that everything happens by chance. This is shown in the film by both character’s believing that the character of Rachel will fall in love with at least one of them because she did previously however because of the director’s belief in fate, he thought there could be a joke if both characters no matter how they act are going to get turned down.
Jack was inspired a lot by Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson’s comedy style since he grew up on those films. The Jack wanted to emulate their style of comedy but also wanted to create his own style as well.
